More information about the video content bellow: 1. The former capital Belize City was nearly completely destroyed by Hurricane Hattie in 1961! The hurricane killed at least 400 people and demolished half of Belize city. After hurricane Hattie, the capital city was moved to Belmopan. With just over 12,000 inhabitants Belmopan is one of the smallest capital cities in the World! 2. The tallest building in Belize is a Mayan temple, at Caracol! Belize has around 900 Mayan sites. The first people to inhabit Belize were the Maya around 1500 B.C.E. As shown in archeological records, they established a number of settlements such as Caracol, Lamanai and Lubaantun. 3. The country has some weird folklore characters. One of them, Tata Duende, is a dwarf with a thumb complex and sometimes his feet are said to point backwards. He himself has no thumb and he cuts off everyone else’s. He is known to hang out in the local forest and looks for kids who try to kill the local wildlife and punishes them. 4. The Belize Barrier Reef is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and holds more than 450+ fish species. It is comprised of seven protected areas; Bacalar Chico National Park and Marine Reserve, Blue Hole Natural Monument, Half Moon Caye Natural Monument, South Water Caye Marine Reserve, Glover’s Reef Marine Reserve, Laughing Bird Caye National Park and Sapodilla Cayes Marine Reserve. 5. Belize is filled with 450 cayes (pronounced keys), which are small islands. The islands may have remained uninhabited for years, but each Cay has a watchman which is appointed by the government. This has to be the mother of all awesome jobs. 6. The Great Blue Hole is the world’s largest sea sinkhole and a paradise for deep sea divers. It’s a huge 984 feet across and 407 feet deep depression in the middle of the sea. It is said that the deeper one goes, the water becomes more clear and the formations, more complex. It is also a part of the larger Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System. 7. The Toledo district is officially known as “the forgotten land” of Belize. It is a pristine, untouched world in the middle of nowhere. Although the least developed region in the country, it features some of the most pristine rainforests, extensive cave networks, coastal lowland plains, and offshore cays. Welcome to my travelchannel. On my channel you can find almost 1000 films of more than 70 countries. Belize is bordered to the north by Mexico, to the south and west by Guatemala and to the east by the Caribbean Sea. Its mainland is about 290 km (180 mi) long and 110 km (68 mi) wide. With 22,960 square kilometres (8,860 sq mi) of land and a population of only 312,698 inhabitants (2010 census),Belize possesses the lowest population density in Central America. The country's population growth rate of 3.15% (2012 est.) is the second highest in the region and one of the highest in the western hemisphere. Belize's abundance of terrestrial and marine species, and its diversity of ecosystems give it a key place within the globally significant Mesoamerican Biological Corridor. Belize has a diverse society, comprising many cultures and languages. It is the only nation in the region with a British colonial heritage, but as a part of the Western Caribbean Zone, it also shares a common heritage with the fellow Anglophone Caribbean countries. In general, Belize is considered to be a Central American nation with strong ties to both the Caribbean and Latin America. Belize is a member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), and Sistema de la Integración Centroamericana (SICA). Belize is known for its September Celebrations, and is the birthplace of chewing gum and Punta Rock The origin of the name Belize is unclear, but the earliest record of the name is found in the journal of the Dominican priest Fray José Delgado, dating to 1677. Delgado recorded the names of three major rivers that he crossed while traveling north along the Caribbean coast: Rio Soyte, Rio Xibum, and Rio Balis. These names, which correspond to the Sittee River, Sibun River, and Belize River, were provided to Delgado by his translator. It is likely that Delgado's "Balis" was actually the Mayan word belix (or beliz), meaning "muddy-watered". Others have suggested that the name is derived from a Spanish pronunciation of the name of the Scottish buccaneer Peter Wallace, which was applied to an early settlement at the mouth of the Belize River, although there is no proof that Wallace actually settled in the area and some have characterized this claim as a myth.Several other possible etymologies have been suggested by writers and historians, including French and African origins. The Belize Barrier Reef is a series of coral reefs straddling the coast of Belize, roughly 300 meters (980 ft) offshore in the north and 40 kilometers (25 mi) in the south within the country limits. The Belize Barrier Reef is a 300 kilometers (190 mi) long section of the 900 kilometers (560 mi) long Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, which is continuous from Cancún on the northeast tip of the Yucatán Peninsula through the Riviera Maya up to Honduras making it one of the largest coral reef systems in the world after the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the New Caledonia Barrier Reef. It is Belize's top tourist destination, popular for scuba diving and snorkeling and attracting almost half of its 260,000 visitors, and is vital to its fishing industry. Charles Darwin described it as "the most remarkable reef in the West Indies" in 1842. A combination of natural factors—climate, the Belize Barrier Reef, over 450 offshore Cayes (islands), excellent fishing, safe waters for boating, scuba diving, and snorkeling, numerous rivers for rafting, and kayaking, various jungle and wildlife reserves of fauna and flora, for hiking, bird watching, and helicopter touring, as well as many Maya ruins—support the thriving tourism and ecotourism industry. Of the hundreds of cave systems, it also has the largest cave system in Central America. Development costs are high, but the Government of Belize has designated tourism as its second development priority after agriculture. In 2012, tourist arrivals totalled 917,869 (with about 584,683 from the U.S.) and tourist receipts amounted to over $1.3 billion.

Blog | http://www.aperezvoyages.com Instagram | Aperezvoyages Facebook Page | https://www.facebook.com/aperezvoyages Snapchat : APerezVoyages Day 1: San Pedro 3:58 Day 2: Snorkeling 12:30 Day 3: Belize City 22:22, Xunantunich 31:45, Cahal Pech 40:40 Day 4: Entering Guatemala This was not only my first trip to Central America but my first backpacking trip. This trip was a huge breakthrough in my vision of travel as I have spend the past year evolving my passion and desire for travel. It was suppose to be two plus ones, however my mom didn't make it because of school. So my step father and I happily flew into the beautiful countries of Belize and Guatemala, Two completely different yet diverse lands with amazing people. Although Belize is the only English speaking country in Central America, it is a mixing pot of English, Spanish, Mayan, and coastal Garifuna cultures. Belize is a good mashup of tourist and backpacker all in one. After flying into Belize Citys airport out the outskirts of the city, we took a cab to the Belize City Water Taxi terminal. From here we took about an hour boat ride to Caye Caulker en route to our island, Ambergris Caye where San Pedro is. San Pedro so far was the most relaxing and most laid back place I have ever been to. WHen they say take it slow, they mean it as time nearly seized to exist and our time there seemed to last longer than we thought, GOOD. We spend half of our second day strolling the beaches, walking around town where all they primarily drive is golf carts, and finally went snorkeling in Shark Alley with sharks, turtles, and fish. Third day we left the relaxation of the island behind, headed for Belize City and took our first 3 hour chicken bus across Belize for San Ignacio. Although uncomfortable, the bus ride costed us a whopping $4. Once we finally arrived in San Ignacio, we settled in our cozy hotel and took a cab ride over to the Mayan ruins of Xunantunich, 15 to 20 minutes from the Guatemala border and the Mayan ruins of Cahal Pech, outside the city. Considering the distance, we walked from Cahal Pech through the small town of San Ignacio to catch dinner and finally head back to our hotel. Instead of our fourth day cave diving or tubing, we cancelled those plans and headed straight for the Guatemalan border to spend the next five days there before heading back home. Belize is an amazing country for it's size. It not only offers great tourism but offers foreigners the opportunity to buy land for retirement. As for backpackers, Belize is the most if not one of the more expensive countries in Central America. However, the experience between relaxing on a Belizean beach or hiking up a Mayan pyramid is something that you truly can never forget. For a small English speaking nation in Central America, Belize is Unbelizable. Can you Belize it? :) Many years ago, I sat in a college classroom glancing at pictures of travel, two years ago I started, last year I left the country for the first time, this trip, I backpacked for the first time. Like all my videos, they represent me as I put my heart into all of my footage. I not only enjoy my time and explore but I hope to give others the opportunity to see how things are done beyond the travel guides and books. This is travel in the eyes of Anthony Perez! Clean facilities, immediate service, qualified staff... and the entire visit, PLUS MEDICATION, cost less just $70. First-rate care at bargain prices... Glynna tell you all about it in her Dec. 6 postcard. Dec 7 -- Speaking of medical care, Lynn Armstrong writes in from Corozal, Belize, where she says that when you need to see a doctor, there's no calling ahead or waiting for an appointment. You just show up and they see you. You even get lab results the same day. Plus, they speak English... you knew Belize was the only English-speaking country in the Caribbean, right? Find out more in Lynn's Dec 7 postcard. Dec 8 -- Carrie Dow tells us the story of a friend of hers, Elbert Greer. Elbert had been using Ambergris Caye in Belize as a base to find a Caribbean hideaway to start his life over. He checked out the Caymans, Turks and Caicos, you name it... until he realized that everything he needed—stable government, low prices, "fee simple" land ownership—was already under his feet in Belize. It's a great story... read the whole thing in Carrie's Dec 8 postcard. http://internationalliving.com/countries/belize/live/ Dec 9 -- Don Skiver says that when he first visited Placencia, Belize, it brought back memories of growing up in southern Ohio in the 1950s... a kinder, gentler time... barefoot kids playing in the park, kicking soccer balls, riding bikes, going anywhere in town without a care. That's not all that touched his heart about this amazing little corner of Belize... find out what else Don found in his Dec 9 postcard. Dec 10 -- Bob Bauman writes in to say that natural beauty and English language isn't all Belize has going for it. If you're looking for a place to plant your "residency" flag, Bob says Belize should be high on your list. Its offshore laws ensure maximum financial privacy... they allow asset-protection trusts, and there are no local income taxes, either personal or corporate, and no currency exchange controls. Bob really give you something to think about if you're exploring your residency options... find out more in his Dec 10 postcard. Dec 11 -- Ronan McMahon of Pathfinder real estate writes in from beneath a thatched-roof palapa bar on a sunny beach in northern Belize where he's found an incredible deal... residential property right in front of him that he can see from his stool at the beachside palapa bar for less than $50,000.
